IBT — Initial Basic Training
What IBT is, who it is for, and how it shows up on the YourADI platform for motorbike instructors.
What IBT is
IBT stands for Initial Basic Training. It is the structured course of motorbike riding lessons that every new rider in Ireland must complete with an Approved Driving Instructor before they are allowed to ride on the public road on a learner permit.
The course is set by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and covers the foundational skills a new rider needs: slow-speed manoeuvring, braking, road positioning, junctions, and on-road riding under instructor supervision. It applies to different motorcycle categories (A1, A2, A) with different syllabus requirements for each.
Who IBT is for
IBT applies to anyone who has not previously held a full motorcycle licence in the corresponding category and is now working towards riding under a learner permit. Returning riders and category-upgrade riders have different rules.
How YourADI tracks IBT
YourADI ships with an IBT programme template alongside the EDT one. Motorbike-focused instructors and schools can use it as the basis for their teaching, customise the module list, or create their own programmes for the category they specialise in.
Lessons taught against the IBT programme show up in the student's portal as their progress through the course, and on the instructor's dashboard as the same picture from the teaching side.
