EDT — Essential Driver Training
What EDT is, who it's for, and how it shows up inside YourADI on both the instructor and student side.
What EDT is
EDT stands for Essential Driver Training. It is the structured programme of professional driving lessons that every learner driver in Ireland must complete with an Approved Driving Instructor before they are permitted to sit the practical driving test for a Category B (car) licence.
The programme is set by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and consists of a fixed sequence of modules covering things like car controls, vehicle checks, junctions, roundabouts, anticipation and reaction, and motorway driving. Each module is taught lesson-by-lesson and signed off in the learner's paper logbook by the instructor.
Who EDT is for
EDT applies to anyone who passed their driver theory test on or after 4 April 2011 and is working towards a Category B (car) licence. Learners outside that window and learners working towards other categories follow different rules.
How YourADI tracks EDT
YourADI ships with an EDT programme template based on the standard syllabus. As a school or solo instructor, you can use it as-is or customise the modules to match how you teach. Each lesson you give can be linked to a module, and the student's portal shows their progress across the full syllabus.
On the instructor side you see the same picture from the dashboard: which modules are ticked off, which still need work, and the notes you added at each step.
